How AblePay Benefits Our Patients

AblePay is a NO-COST program that allows you to save on your out-of-pocket medical expenses (deductibles, coinsurance, and copays) while assisting if you ever have questions regarding your bill. 

 

We know that it sounds too good to be true, but we can promise you there is no catch. Here’s how it works: 

 

AblePay is assisting Penn Medicine in reducing our expenses related to patient payments. Having AblePay process these patient claims on our behalf means lower costs and guaranteed payments for the health system. AblePay then takes a portion of these savings and shares them with their members (our patients) who can then save on their out-of-pocket medical expenses. They simply retain a portion of the savings to fund the work they do for both Penn Medicine and for our patients.

 

AblePay can be used with any health insurance, including Medicare, so almost everyone is eligible to participate. You can also include anyone on your account that you are willing to be financially responsible for, even if they have a different insurance plan! All Penn Medicine patients are automatically accepted into the program without any credit checks!

 

AblePay works for our patients by providing savings, up to 13%, on your out-of-pocket medical expenses. They also provide flexible payment options to give you time allowing you to pay medical bills on terms that meet your current financial needs. Since all your Penn Medicine bills are conveniently stored in your AblePay portal, paying your bills has never been easier. Plus, the AblePay billing advocates are available to answer any questions you may have regarding a bill.

The Penn Medicine and AblePay Health Story


There is a rich history surrounding Penn Medicine. Our legacy of patient care began more than two centuries ago with the founding of the nation's first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, in 1751. We also founded the nation's first medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1765.

Since our founding days, we've expanded medical frontiers by creating some of the nation's earliest programs in areas ranging from dermatology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and radiology to the Philadelphia region's only program to transplantation of five major organs.

Penn Medicine has pioneered medical frontiers with a staff comprised of innovators who have dedicated their lives to advancing medicine through excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Our connection with AblePay Health is a more recent part of this history.

AblePay Health, based in Bethlehem Pennsylvania, was founded in 2016 with a mission to offer a simple solution to the rising out-of-pocket medical expenses that many patients face today.

LVHN became aware of AblePay through mutual contacts in the healthcare industry. We immediately recognized the value their program provided to our patients as well as the impact they could have in helping the network control our receivable expenses.

Since 2017, AblePay Health has been working with medical providers, patients, and employers in eastern Pennsylvania. More recently they have expanded services into Ohio, Kentucky, and Georgia.

We are excited to partner with them to assist our patients with their out-of-pocket medical expenses.




How to Use AblePay


The first step is becoming a member. Enrolling is simple and takes less than five minutes.

  • Just use any of the “ Enroll” buttons on this page.
  • Enter your demographic information as prompted.
  • Add your family members that you’ll be responsible for (they can have a different insurance plan).
  • Select your default payment term and add your payment method(s).
  • Review the terms of service, privacy policy and verify your email.
  • Receive your AblePay card(s) in the mail and keep with your insurance card. 
The next time you visit a Penn Medicine provider, show your AblePay card when you present or verify your primary health insurance. Penn Medicine will process your AblePay card like secondary insurance. After your service is complete and your insurance company processes your claim, Penn Medicine will bill AblePay. You will get an email from AblePay notifying you that they received your bill and the amount you owe (after your insurance processes the claim). Your insurance carrier will still provide your Explanation of Benefits (EOB). Once notified of a new claim, you will have 5 days to decide if you would like to change your payment method and term to meet your financial needs. If you make no changes, after 5 days the first payment will be pulled from your default payment method based on the default term you chose during enrollment.  The best part is that you may utilize the program at any Penn Medicine location, hospital, walk-in care, lab, or physician office!
