Founder and CEO

From his experience as CFO and COO of a hospital network, John saw firsthand the inefficiencies in healthcare and set out to create companies to solve them. AblePay is his third successful start-up with both previous ventures still in operation.

AblePay was founded in 2016 to address the impact that increasing deductibles and coinsurance have on consumers, employers and providers.

John attended Lafayette College (’00) where he was a Captain, First Team All Patriot League and All East Coast Athletic Conference Linebacker. He received an MBA in Finance from Lehigh University (’04) while building the hospital network.

Born and raised in Bethlehem, Pa., he currently resides in the area with his wife Trisha, and three sons. John coached football at Freedom High School before devoting his time to help coach his children who play baseball, basketball, and football at varying levels.

John and Trisha’s community minded interests include support of Lafayette College and Red Door Early Learning Center (pre-school) for which they personally funded and serve on the board.



VP, Operations

Valerie Banotai is a standards-focused leader with over 25 years of expertise in healthcare billing and information management including experience in implementing innovative revenue cycle work processes, EDI integration, managing client relations, solving complex problems and attaining business objectives.


Valerie started her career as a billing clerk in the business office of a community hospital and was quickly promoted to manager of the physician billing department. During her tenure, she lead the department’s business growth by developing a billing service for independent physicians, created standards of operations in all areas of billing, collection and AR management and implemented new revenue cycle applications.

In 2009, Valerie assumed the position of central business office director of a hospital network with oversight of both hospital and physician reimbursement. Drawing on her prior experiences, Valerie initially focused on developing standards of operations across the revenue cycle and integrating various billing types. Her role was expanded to include direct oversight for implementing several new revenue cycle applications, readying the applications for ICD10, version upgrades, user support and education. 

Valarie joined the AblePay Health team in 2016 and is instrumental in ensuring that all aspects of the members experience are met and fulfilled.

She is a lifelong resident of Allentown where she currently resides with her husband Tom.



SVP, Sales and Marketing

Prior to assuming his current role at AblePay Health, Ryan was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mack Defense (wholly-owned subsidiary of Mack Trucks, Inc.) and he also served as a member of the Mack Defense Board of Directors from 2014-2017.  

During his time as President, Ryan had responsibility for sales of Mack Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Construction Equipment, and Renault Trucks Defense portfolios to the United States Federal Government and ministerial level governments throughout the world.  

His leadership of sales, marketing, and business development activities resulted in increased sales and over $650 million in revenue for the company.

In June of 2015, Mack Defense secured the largest defense contract since World War II for Mack Trucks, Inc. 

Ryan is a US Army veteran having served on US Army active duty from 1996-2008.  Ryan is a veteran of the Iraq war with deployments in 2003 and 2011 and is now a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve.  His last assignment on active duty was as the Director of the White House Transportation Agency (Washington, D.C.) under the President George W. Bush administration. In this capacity, his organization was responsible for the ground transportation of the White House Staff and for support of Presidential trips and motorcades throughout the world. 

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Badge.  He has a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point. 

Ryan currently lives in Center Valley, PA with his wife Shauna and children.



VP, Marketing and Communications

Rick Schoenen has varied career experience in management, sales and marketing across multiple industries, including healthcare.

While his education, undergraduate and MBA is marketing focused he has spent most of his career on “the other side of the desk”, having run businesses, managing staff, planning budgets, and working with financials. All while handling the marketing and advertising, plus running daily operations and all that comes with it.

He began his career in the energy industry, managing operations in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, eventually creating the "Market" business model that was adopted corporate wide for 144 locations across six states.

Deciding to take his career in a totally different direction, he entered the realm of healthcare, as Director of Marketing for a large, regional, musculoskeletal practice. Eventually re-branding the entire practice and surgical centers, establishing the brand as one of the most recognizable health care providers in the Lehigh Valley and Pocono region, while overseeing the employee health segment of the practice in addition to his marketing duties.  

In 2010 he created Schoenen Marketing, deciding to run his own business and use what he learned to assist other business leaders with their marketing, media, and advertising plans and strategies. Working with owners, operators, and managers in a variety of industries, including but not limited to: healthcare, entertainment, higher education, financial, banking, and service based industries.

Born and raised in Bethlehem, Pa. Rick and his wife Michele reside in in the Lehigh Valley and have two grown daughters, Jessica and Nicole.

SVP, New Market Development

Eric has over 20 years of sales experience, with the majority of his career spent in healthcare.  As an account executive with CR Bard Inc., he was awarded Presidents Gold Club status for having achieved top sales rankings on a national level multiple times throughout his career.


Working with hospital executives and surgical teams, he led the standardization of processes for the Davol Hernia and BioSurgery divisions within major hospital networks in Pennsylvania and Florida.


In addition to his sales duties, Eric was part of the Sales Advisory Council and was named Field Sales Trainer, instructing new hiring classes and directly training 20 new hires. He was invited to speak at three national sales meeting during his tenor at CR Bard Inc.


A Bethlehem native, Eric has a BS in Marketing from DeSales University, and began his career as a territory manager for Automatic Data Processing (ADP).


His extensive experience in developing relationships with hospital and practice administrators will lend itself in his new role bringing on additional providers and growing the AblePay Health provider network for our members.


He currently resides in Oviedo, Florida with his wife Marci and two children, Morgan and Mason.



VP, Development-Philadelphia

As an employee benefits broker, Carolyn understood the value of AblePay for her clients and their employees right away. When a position became available, she didn’t hesitate to join the team in her current role as Vice President of Development for the Philadelphia market.


During her 17-year career as a benefits broker, Carolyn earned Top Producer status by optimizing employers’ investments in employee benefits. She steered her clients towards effective, long-term strategies for cost containment, compliance with government regulations, and wellness-among other areas.


She continues to enjoy working with employers and employees of companies in the Philadelphia area and now helps health insurance brokers see the value of AblePay like she did. 


She is a Board Member and past President of the local SHRM Chapter, Greater Valley Forge Human Resource Association (GVFHRA). She also serves on the board of The Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust.


Carolyn graduated from Villanova University with a BS in Marketing, holds the Life, Health, and Accident Insurance License and lives with her husband Bruce and dog Artie in Gladwyne, Pa.

Jason Fistner

Chief Developer

Jason brings a lifetime of relentless learning and curiosity to the AblePay team. Jason’s refusal to accept mediocrity and anything less than perfection drives the development efforts. After graduating from Pennsylvania State University with both Computer Engineering and Psychology degrees, he has supported various companies in solving their technical problems. When he is not coding, Jason is an avid musician. He currently resides in Bethlehem, PA.
